You know you're getting old and boring when you blog about the office holiday party, and not because your boss got sloshed and started dancing on the tables, singing showtunes and wearing his wife's feather boa. (That didn't happen, sadly.)

First of all, I was driving around trying to find the damned country club for an hour. An HOUR. In the dark, when the roads were covered in snow. The place is 15 minutes from my house. I plugged the address on the invitation into my GPS (and double-checked on the internet before leaving), and it took me to the middle of a residential area. I called my dad, and the internet wasn't really helping him either. So I called my mom, and she told me it was in the opposite direction, like 2 miles from the street address, and I finally got there. I was pretty annoyed and frustrated.

So I went inside, and then my social awkwardness set in, and I was thinking, oh crap, where do I sit? I only knew about 1/3 of the people there. (I guess the others were spouses and Westinghouse people that sort of work for Enercon at the Waltz Mill site... I know all their names and employee numbers since I enter their timesheets, but I've never met any of them.) The people I know fairly well were at full tables, so I went over to an empty one. Then I told myself, no Ade, this is not the first semester of college. You go find a table and sit with people and talk to them, dammit. So I went over and asked some people if there was room, and they made room for me. Yay, slightly less awkward.

Though I was in a room full of Grownup Types, I sat next to Jen, the other office baby. (She's my age, but she works in the other building, so I don't see her as much.) We eventually got into a big discussion on cats, and at one point, her husband commented that he was sitting in the Cat Lady section. So I was social! Yay!

(Being social at a party and not doing the panicking-and-feeling-horribly-awkward-and-fleeing-ASAP thing is a big accomplishment for me. I have extremely crippling social issues, and it's a wonder I even have a job and leave my house once in a while. If I'm with people I know and like fairly well, I'm fine, but if it's an unfamiliar situation with mostly people I don't know, I freak out and have anxiety attacks.)

Oh! And I'm also proud of myself for trying something new. Well, not entirely new, but something I hadn't eaten in ages. The dinner choices were kinda limited, so I ended up with chicken and salmon. I hadn't eaten salmon in over 15 years. When I was really young, I liked salmon, but then I didn't when I got older. I just don't like fish. But I made myself try the salmon tonight. It wasn't bad. I mean, it wasn't good either, and it was kind of bland, but it was edible. So yay for trying something different.

And then when I got back home, my car got stuck halfway into the driveway, so I had to shovel the end of the driveway enough to get the car onto the flat part. Weee. I should really shovel the driveway and sidewalk, but I know I'll just procrastinate, like I always do.

Also, Moravian spice cookies are awesome.

at best, I have sprained my left pinky

At worst, it is broken.

Whatever it is, it hurts like a mofo :(

lucky me gets to drive into St. Pete for petitioning today. It'd be easier if the people I'd emailed had gotten BACK to me with the info I requested

In which Sky settles in for some relaxation.

I am out of the dorm (as of noon yesterday) and officially on Winter Break! (And you would not believe how much homework I have for the break. Greek teacher assigned so. much. homework. *flail*)

You know what I am so excited to do? Read a ton of books. I want to round out the year having read 100 books. I'm at 84, so I have a ways to go in... a week and a half? (Yeah, totally not going to be able to read 16 books in that time, but still.) And also knit a lace shawl. I don't have the giant blocks of uninterrupted time for that at school. Or the patience, really. But I'm going to do it over Winter Break. Because I can.

Also, I will be going to NYC for New Year's and I'll be there for about two weeks. I can't wait to see everyone.

I know I should be irked that my first petition (EVAR) event was canceled due to weather this morning

but I'm not. I'm actually ecstatic that I can sleep for a few more hours.

Though the chances that the health care rally this afternoon being canceled are slim to none. Booo.

fangirling

I am not as bad of a squealing fangirl as people think I am. Really, I'm not. It's a fun front to put up, though. And depending on who I'm with, I'll fangirl more or less. And in high school... I WAS that bad.

So, tonight, when I watched the special features off of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince DVD, I was blown away by how hard I was fangirling. Like, there were a bunch of trivial interviews held by Tom Felton (the guy who plays Draco), but he had his normal hair style and color and wore regular clothes, and then the Phelps twins did a bunch of interviews, and Rupert responded to a couple of interviews, and I...

pretty much died and went to a happy place.

It's REALLY weird to fangirl that much anymore. And it's been so long since I spazzed like that. I forgot how nice it can be to squeal like a fourteen-year-old girl at a Twilight premiere *shudders* *Evanna Lynch is SO amazing. Did you know she made a lot of her own jewelry for Luna Lovegood???*

(((Um... once HP World is up at Universal, anybody want to rent a hotel room at a Universal resort and go spend a nice day haunting Hogwarts with me???))) (((And it HAS to be a Universal resort because I want to spend the extra $$$ for the pampering)))

:-D

My dad got me a copy of Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins! -- which, if you don't know, is the very best Hanukkah book ever. I read it to myself last night before I went to sleep.

Things are progressing. I have a million plans for the future and less and less time to lay all the groundwork (still to do: get my international driver's license, get a copy of my background check, buy netbook, get Skype, get new clothes.) [info]systemcrasher is gamely keeping up, and occasionally reminding me that I'm starting to froth at the mouth.

We have a safety net. I just have to keep reminding myself that, and not lock myself into things I'm not entirely happy with just to have money.

"Any Macbeth you walk away from with bloody hands is a good Macbeth."

Saw "Sleep No More". Was crazy awesome. Also, seriously creepy. The bit where I was alone with the male witch was the most freaked out I've been in a long time. In a good way. Got a joker and some slightly bloody hands out of it. I highly recommend it to all you Boston-area fish; I could easily go back several more times. It fits together really well. Great use of space, atmosphere, music, blurring the boundary between audience and performance. (Went with Sho and Sam, incidentally. Sho had already been and is going again tomorrow.)

Had some Tibetan food beforehand at a place near by (in Brookline). Good, though not quite up to the level Sunday's Mu Que Ca.

Now, to try to normalize my sleep schedule a bit.

So, the Greek Final went pretty awful. The odds that I would've happened to hit that passage if I'd studied more are pretty low, though; I thought I needed to study syntax more since that was my issue on the midterm, but I bombed the second translation and the extra credit wasn't much better. At least the midterm was good, and if my paper was good, I still have a chance. And if I do too badly, I can always drop Greek from my major and go Latin/English. As long as the Latin Final isn't as bad. Maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought it was. All I can do is wait and see.

And study Latin like crazy because I don't want that to happen again.

On the bright side, my dad's officially Canadian! So soon, I should be officially Canadian too!

The Moral of Stat 1

Just because a class is really easy and well below my math level doesn't mean I should go into the exam with a note card containing formulae with variables I am unsure of. Nor should I turn in homeworks without at least checking to see that I answered all the questions, and with one answer for each. If these small instances of stupidity add up to an adverse effect on my grade, I may have to display my sophomore year of college bad grade in Stat 1 next to my 8th grade science fair American Statistical Association award.

Hopefully it'll all work out, though, and today I got cookies from my boss and a bag of chocolate goodness from Gina in Poli Sci. She's so sweet; I thought she was just chatting when she asked if I was going to work today, but now I'm guessing that was part of the plan.

I'm taking my Greek exam after dinner whether I'm ready or not. Why am I not studying right now? I hope I'm ready.

If your best friend and/or romantic partner read all of your email for the last month (or longer), how would it impact your relationship(s) and why?

It wouldn't. If a good friend looked in my inbox, (s)he would probably say something like, "Wow, you really need to go on a deleting spree. How many mailing lists are you on, anyway? And why does your dad keep forwarding you annoying conservative political chain emails when he should know very well that you don't give a crap about politics?"

There's nothing particularly scandalous in my emails from the last month or so. But I do need to go on a deleting spree. There are currently 3830 messages in my Gmail inbox. I need to go through and delete all the Facebook notifications, Joann coupons, and "Dad spam." (I "unsubscribed" a few years ago, but I guess that must have expired.)

ATTN: NYC PEOPLE

I need a place to stay for the nights of Jan 3-5 while my mom is in town and needs the use of her apartment (which is where I'll be staying the rest of the time). Anyone want to hang out for three days? ([info]girasola, I'm looking at you.)

Thanks in advance!
